TOPIC: Raised Garden Beds. Inspired by a growing gardening trend in Australia, Karen Hollingshead has converted a large portion of her food garden to raised galvanized steel beds. Planning for the day when digging in the dirt might cause more aches and pains than it does now, these new beds provide a waist-high soil surface that is easy on the back and out of reach for the rabbits. Win win!
As you enjoy a summer evening, Karen will explain how she installed her raised beds and walk you through practices such as hugelkultur, square foot gardening, succession planting and vertical gardening that help to maximize her harvest each year.

  • The tour will begin at 7:00 pm sharp. This is to accommodate the earlier sunset and to NOT accommodate the attack of mosquitoes.
  • It is recommended that attendees wear long pants, wear comfortable flat shoes and bring some bug repellent.
  • Attendees are also asked to bring a lawn chair to use on the deck.  After the tour of the garden the remainder of the discussion will be held on the deck that overlooks the garden.
  • Meeting will conclude on or before 8:30pm.

SPEAKER: Karen Hollingshead has been an avid gardener her entire life. As a small child she loved to help her parents and grandparents tend and harvest their gardens and even had a small garden of her own. Fresh flowers, fruit, herbs and vegetables were always in abundance. Growing healthy food and knowing how to cook, preserve and store the abundance is her passion.
